Don't pay $1000, $2000, or in some cases
over $10,000
for mastering. Don't be fooled by
the hype, salesmanship, and credentials.
Most studios have comparible equipment, but higher overhead. It's the
engineer that makes the difference. With 30 years experience, my mastering
will equal any in the World.

Dynamic
range is a measurement from the softest section, to the loudest. It"s
measured in decibels. The CD redbook standard of 16 bits allows a dynamic
range of 96 db (6 db’s
per bit). Live music can reach 140db. When
you maximize a CD, you
reduce the dynamic range.
In digital recording, there is nothing above 0. You are just throwing away that
information, to give it more apparent volume.
People who want their CD to be extremely loud, end up with about
a 12 bit dynamic range instead of 16bit. I try to be more conservative
with overall volume, to retain more dynamics. If you want your CD to be
louder, then turn up the amplifier. If you find a CD that is really loud,
and you think it sounds good, it would sound better with more dynamic
range.
